HISTORY-MAKER DANIEL ELSSBERG ENDORSES ALLAN LICHTMAN

Written by: Allan lichtman on Jun 16, 2006 10:57 AM EDT

History-maker Daniel Ellsberg, the man responsible for releasing the Pentagon Papers, has endorsed Maryland U.S. Senate candidate Allan Lichtman. Ellsberg flew in from California during the Memorial Day weekend to endorse Lichtman at a fundraiser held at the home of Dr. Peter Kuznick, Director of the Nuclear Studies Institute at American University.

Daniel Ellsberg is widely known for releasing the Pentagon Papers in 1971. These classified documents, detailing military actions during the Vietnam War, led to a major decline in public support for the war and to retaliation against Ellsberg by the Nixon administration.

Ellsberg said that Lichtman "actually stands for something and has the backbone to defend our American values." Ellsberg specifically highlighted Lichtman's strong opposition to the War in Iraq, the Bush administration's violations of our civil liberties, and its neglect of education and other urgent domestic priorities.

"While other candidates spend their time raising money and speaking in generalities, Allan Lichtman listens to the voters and raises the issues that matter. When Senator, Allan will make it his goal to protect the interests of Marylanders and all Americans - no matter how hard he has to fight against the wealthy corporate interests that control Washington today. Allan Lichtman's voice and leadership is desperately needed in these perilous times."

Ellsberg is not the first national figure to endorse Allan Lichtman. The Senate candidate has also received endorsements from former presidential candidates George McGovern and John Anderson, from American Women Presidents, and from former Governor of Mississippi, Ray Mabus.

Kai Bird and Carolyn Forche joined Ellsberg in his endorsement of Allan Lichtman. Bird is a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer, and Forche is an award-winning poet and human rights activist. Both renowned writers stated a need for Lichtman's leadership during such a "tumultuous time in American history."
