Green Mountain Service Scholarships

Written by: Matt Dunne on Apr 17, 2006 5:13 PM EDT

In January, Matt proposed legislation to create the Green Mountain Service Scholarships, a 2-for-1 match of the AmeriCorps Education Award for any Vermont high school graduate willing to attend a Vermont college or university. If passed, every Vermont student who serves his/her country through AmeriCorps for two years will be eligible to graduate from a Vermont State College debt-free. Matt has also led legislative campaigns to increase funding for the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps and to oppose any funding cuts for AmeriCorps programs, including the Bush Administration's attempt to exclude Teach for America from National Service funding. In March 2006 he authored a resolution opposing the proposed elimination of the National Civilian Community Corps. The VT legislature passed the resolution unanimously, and now Matt is calling on other states to pass similar statements. He is currently pushing for a new state-funded Mentoring Corps of AmeriCorps*VISTA members who will increase the capacity and impact of mentoring programs throughout the state.
