VLWC Popular Economics Education Institute this month!

VLWC Popular Economics Education Institute, June 2006.
Three economic training opportunities, especially designed for advocates, union members, educators, community members, and activists will be held in mid June. Participants can attend one or all trainings.

I. Tuesday, June 13, noon-2pm. "The Color of Wealth Workshop." Location: Seventh Generation, 60 Lake St., Burlington.

Why do people of color typically have a eighteen cents for every dollar of white wealth? In this interactive workshop, participants will use their own family histories to illuminate the government actions that created the racial disparities we see today.

Co-facilitated by Betsy Leondar-Wright, Communications Director of United for Fair Economy, and Ita Meno, community organizer from Burlington. II. Thursday, June 22, 7:30-9:pm, "War & the Economy Workshop." Free and open enrollment, no cap. Tentative location: Burlington High School, 52 Institute Rd., Burlington.

This workshop is about economic inequality, not about the morality of war and militarism. The workshop goals are to: explore the impact of militarism on the US economy; examine the impact that war and militarism from race, gender, and class perspectives; and demonstrate that war and militarism drain resources from basic family and community needs in general. The Peace & Justice Center will also offer participants local info on how to connect to current economic justice and anti-war campaigns around VT.

III. Thursday-Saturday, June 22-24, "Popular Economics Education Intensive Institute." Intensive "training for trainers" for activists working for social and economic justice. Tentative location: Burlington High School, 52 Institute Rd., Burlington.

The workshop will give participants the opportunity to learn about past and current national economic trends and policies, and their impact on gender and race; practice and receive constructive feedback on how to lead discussions and workshops on economic inequality; network and build solidarity with others working for economic justice.

Food and training materials will be provided. Training begins at 3pm on Thursday the 22nd and ends at 6pm on Saturday the 24th.
