The fact that our Constitution gives a single person (Bush) the right to veto the will of 66% of the American people, and because less than that percentage of those in Congress are likely to vote to override it, that it will likely stand...points out that our Constitution does not really provide the "checks and balances" it was designed to. It is far from balanced, and far from democratic when one person can overrule the will of the people. That is called dictatorship. For all our Constitution's good intentions, this neo-con cabal has found a way to squeeze through the loopholes in it. This is not the first instance of that. We have been living in a near-dictatorship for almost six years, and our dictator is starting to argue that our military shoyuld not be controlled by the civilian legislative assembly!!! The time has come to give power to the people. We need Constitutional amendments that will transform this country from an oligarchy masking itself as a republic into a constitutional democracy, with built-in protections for minority interests and individuals against majority tyranny, but with better protection against fascism and autocracy.
