THE PUBLIC SQUARE (OPEN THREAD FOR TUESDAY EVENING)
Let the great American political conversation continue and flourish.
xox
http://www.politicalconversation.com/
And from the front page of the link I last deposited, interesting words which are reflective of what I once found here:
DEDICATED TO THE EXPANSION OF POLITICAL UNDERSTANDING, EDUCATION, AND EMPOWERMENT
PROVIDING THE INTELLECTUAL SKILLS NECESSARY FOR THE KNOWLEDGEABLE, PERSUASIVE, AND EFFECTIVE EXPRESSION OF YOUR POLITICAL BELIEFS
Why are these concepts important? Because every citizen needs to be able to act in the political arena.
so everyone can find the open thread
Just had a nice chat with Thankful on my way home from the doctor. Been battling bronchitis the past few days.
Turned on WGN to see the Cubs kicking Brewer butt so I'm feeling much better!
took a throwing error on a double play to win last nught don't get to carried away
it is still July
cheeseheads are a hive of angry wasps with no Brett
I think we are up 6-0 now in the 7th
Brewers are so young a sweep would kill them for the season.
I would root for the cubbies in the series, but I won't say that outloud at my favorite Wisconsin watering hole right now.
McCain has been to Wisconsin four times lately and I can't believe he has a prayer here, but the Wisconsin culture is hunting and beer so you never know what a bunch of bitter guys might do they lose Favre and then the Brewers fold
When I go to a local watering hole in the UP I never talk football. I barely even open my mouth. I know they have loaded guns in those racks out in the pickup, you betcha ;)
I'll be up there in about a month, with mom who is healing quite nicely. She is thinking of moving in with my brother in New Hampshire after the New Year, so my childhood home will be sold sooner than I'm ready to let go. It's the only house I ever lived in so I'm pretty attached to it. Oh well, and life goes on.
Thare a lot o' red-necks in them thare woods ain'a never vote fer n' n'@@'r.
And...then, there are the nice liberal folks in towns like Madison.
O' course in the town of my Pa and his Gran' Pa an' Pa ...well, when the KKK spoke at City Hall back in the '20s or '30s - people said, "they made some good points"
Wisconsin is typical.
I think, Favre will start the season behind Rogers. I'll be fine with that. Brett can stay out of the Sunday slugfest, while Rogers moves the team. And, if something happens to change the line-up, then Brett can play what is in effect a shorter season. A win-win, and the fans can psychologically transition. Brett can be the next George Blanda! LOL
Kaine, Biden and Bayh oh my. I absolutely can't stand Bayh. Obama's campaign doesn't have leaks - are they trying to throw us all off? Oh, and I'm disappointed in the choices if they're indeed on the short list.
I like Sam Nunn.
I'd keep it in my pocket a while yet and play chicken with McCain.
got my tickets to see Barack Thursday so I'm hoping not to see Bayh there
Sam Nunn was a fairly good Senator, attentive to military issues.
He continued the Richard Russell tradition of bringing home the military budget bacon to Georgia.
Barry Goldwater spoke highly of him in regard to holding the Pentagon accountable to the elected Congress.
Just a reminder is in order:
When it was Bill Clinton, and not Sam Nunn, who was the southerner who had the goods to seek the Presidency and Win it, Senator Nunn went around peeking under bunk beds in the process that brought us don't ask don't tell.
And he was a Senator that voted AGAINST the Clinton Budget act of 1993, lining up with every single repug in Congress. Remember that VP Gore took the Senate gavel to cast vote number 51 on that one.
So, Nunn gets no credit for the fiscal discipline and economic growth that flowed from a real deficit reduction act.
We need a 21st Century VP. Sam None ain't it.
I stand with you on the Nunn no good for VP.
There must be better.
I actually think Obama floats Nunn'sa name to paint himself closer to southern Repug hearts. I think Nunn is useful in lending Obama good will, but only as a possible VP.
in thinking loose nukes is one of the globes greatest threats, and Nunn is the one guy I would go to that could be effective on that issue.
I'd sure as heck use him in my administration if I were Obama.
I also think he might just be the guy to turn Georgia blue again, but you know better than me on that.
Sure he has been a anti-progressive of sorts, in my prejudiced mind that kind of goes with the territory in Dixie.
Yeahr, not Bayh. I don't much there. Milk toast. He...well, he looks like a republican, to me anway.
- I went to college with Evan Bayh. I've been watching his highly managed political career for years.
By Susan Rowe on Jul 30, 2008 2:23 AM EDTThe new edit feature is not working.
- now it's working. Strange I tried to edit that post 5 times.
By Susan Rowe on Jul 30, 2008 2:31 AM EDTThe edit didn't work until I did a reply.
I think the reason McCain was flailing about last week was he was going down to Louisiana to annoint Jindal on Wed. and Bobby said no.
he married for money, so I'm betting on Romney
- Yeah and that scares me as Romney is very popular and well liked
By Denise in San Mateo County on Jul 29, 2008 10:24 PM EDTOh and make that 7-0 :)
OK if I can't feel good about the Cubs winning, how about this? I lost 27 pounds in the past two years, 15 since last June - according to my doctor's records and my pants falling off. I knew I had lost some weight but not that much. Lots to go still but man, that makes me happy!
Hi mary!
I'd take Biden out of those three as well.
I like Biden out of the three the best as well. At least he can be a fighter but a tad gaffe-prone. But does he fit the *change* schtick?
WTG on losing weight Denise. My motto is *keep moving your body*. I like to eat so I have to be active.
Nite all!!!
Red Sox fan here... ;-)
(No such page exists) quote and unquote. So other censorship is taking place around here. . . .
- Both of his posts have disappeared. He wrote another entitled "war" and that one is gone, too
By Denise in San Mateo County on Jul 29, 2008 10:59 PM EDTThis place is freaking me out lately
- I think that person was a right-wing rovian plant or something.
By Susan Rowe on Jul 30, 2008 1:55 AM EDTI got back on in time to see it and have got a copy - if anyone is interested I can message it to ya. Thank you Phil, puddle, and Denise for your comments. I can't think how on earth my post led to the assumptions and statements he made, much less triggered enough anger that he wants to spit on me and suggest that I'm not up for a road trip.

Hey Paine ~ stay outta trees! poison oak, that's gotta be no fun.
...love this edit thing - just saw it's poison ivy. there's ivy in the trees by you?
Oh, I do more than climb trees I can't find my way down from...
- The proper place for the writer to have commented was in the reply comment box on the thread that was cited.
By Susan Rowe on Jul 30, 2008 2:08 AM EDT- There has also recently been a person who sells flags post here several times.
By Susan Rowe on Jul 30, 2008 2:12 AM EDTWhich is also inappropriate.
this was no simple comment or op-ed...
I've seen the flag guy ones too, also posts with a zillion links to buy gaming stuff, and then we had the couple days of kily's posts...
I've got a bad case of poison ivy (or whatever), if anyone cares LOL. The prednisone seems to help (well not yet the left wrist which just pisses away near constantly).
- HQ is manipulating everything and must think we don't catch on
By Denise in San Mateo County on Jul 29, 2008 11:09 PM EDTDFA's loss
it could be that others are asking their peeps to recommend also and they get bigger numbers.
I know, I know, of course that's something I would say...
but in closing down the zillion tabs I had open... just as I clicked one closed , I saw the 'Rebuttal to Ms. Thankful' post in the recommended posts box...
I think if posts are reported as spam or inappropriate the system itself removes them not the staff.
The recommend section must have something to with the number and the time of the recommend.
- To use this new system I need to have several windows open.
By Susan Rowe on Jul 30, 2008 3:01 AM EDTSometimes that doesn't make my machine and local server very happy campers. I still can't use internet explorer as a brower to make posts or comments.
Boy, that rich^kolker made wrote an excellent comment for his earlier open thread at the Square!
I just noticed Anni's post about our blog. I recommended it, as I'm sure others have. Let's see if it makes the front page. Won't hold my breath.
It is so obvious that folks we all know SEEM to have become persona non grata.
I guess they are trying to keep posts short (ones that are copyrighted) but the setting is too low for any decent conversation to take place.
I tell ya, this blog has been a subject of consternation for two years now. The only good constants are us.
And with that, I bid you good night. I still have a temp of 100 and I think I better rest.

unless you want to go straight to jail, do not pass "GO", do not collect $200!
New crayon color choices
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://deseretnews.com/js/library.js"></script>
In honor of the 50th anniversary, kids were asked to pick the hottest colors for 2008. These new crayons will be included in the 64 box this year:
• Best friends: This shade of purple reveals who kids' real BFFs are — their parents — and spending time with them is what kids enjoy most.
• Awesome: This orange shade represents the fact that kids think school is cool and getting good grades feels awesome.
• Giving tree: A shade that shows that kids are thinking green, too, and want to play a part in protecting the Earth.
• Super happy: Kids don't want to worry, they just want to be happy — super happy — as this bright yellow, and they wish the same for others, too.
The colors that are temporarily renamed are wild strawberry, bittersweet, burnt orange, forest green, asparagus, cornflower, true blue and orchid.

• Happy ever after: A blue shade that acknowledges the fact that kids want to make a difference and create Cinderella moments for others so everyone's story has a happy ending.
• Fun in the sun: This yellow shade represents riding bikes, playing soccer, skateboarding and gymnastics; kids said the color means that exercise and keeping fit are important and fun.
- At least they ASKED the little kids. . . . I personally *love* bittersweet. . . .
By puddle on Jul 30, 2008 1:43 AM EDT• Bear hug: A gray hue of harmony as kids want their homes to feel warm and loving just like a great big bear hug.
• Famous: American Idol and shows like it inspired the choice of this bright pink color, as kids believe they can become celebrities just like everyday people who become stars.
• Super happy: Kids don't want to worry, they just want to be happy — super happy — as this bright yellow, and they wish the same for others, too.

The Nationals are in town DFest weekend. Sunday's a day game, and we wouldn't want to miss any of DFest, so would anyone be up for Friday night against the Colorado Rockies?
I'll post on the Open Threads throughout the day to judge interest.

- Howard Dean is first.
