America the Beautiful (Ray Charles Version)
Words by Katharine Lee Bates
Oh beautiful, for heroes proved,
In liberating strife,
Who more than self, our country loved,
And mercy more than life,
America, America, may God thy gold refine,
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain devined.
And you know when I was in school,
We used to sing it something like this, listen here:
Oh beautiful, for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties,
Above the fruited plain,
But now wait a minute, I'm talking about
America, sweet America,
You know, God done shed his grace on thee,
He crowned thy good, yes he did, in a brotherhood,
From sea to shining sea.
You know, I wish I had somebody to help me sing this
(America, America, God shed his grace on thee)
America, I love you America, you see,
My God he done shed his grace on thee,
And you oughta love him for it,
Cause he, he, he, he, crowned thy good,
He told me he would, with brotherhood,
(From sea to shining sea).
Oh Lord, oh Lord, I thank you Lord
(Shining sea).

And so it still is despite all the damage environmentally and economically GWB and Co. have done to our country.
Why don't we have America the Beautiful as our national anthem instead of the Star Spangled Banner which is incredibly difficult to sing -- it takes an octave and 1/2 to do it justice. America the Beautiful is beautiful music indeed. Nobody did it better than Ray Charles.
Agreed.
I can at least remember the words to America the Beautiful.
As for our national anthem, well;
"Oh say can you see by the ram parts so proudly standing there ..."
(you can see the problem)
- The young lady, 14 years old, did a wonderful job with the National Anthem at last night's Cubs game
By on Jul 4, 2008 3:34 PM EDT... so you past anything here on the official thread if you mention in this America the Beautiful thread, anything that has the word in the comment:
America
or
Beautiful
typo - so you past anything
s/b - so you can post anything
and now for a comment with the word The (enjoy the tunes from Sherman Oaks, CA):
...
Jimi Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner still sends shivers up my spine.
I'm afraid to type anything.
The KOS diary I put up about the demise of the blog attracted 19 readers. Of the 19, 47% believe the blog should be restored to its previous glory, 15% believe this version should continue, and 36% want watermelon.
The fireworks have started around here -- I'm trying to get the cats inside.

New and Not Improved
We are not shocked when a candidate moves to the center for the general election. But Mr. Obama’s shifts are striking because he was the candidate who proposed to change the face of politics, the man of passionate convictions who did not play old political games.
There are still vital differences between Mr. Obama and Senator John McCain on issues like the war in Iraq, taxes, health care and Supreme Court nominations. We don’t want any “redefining” on these big questions. This country needs change it can believe in.
What is soooooooooooooo hard to get about this lesson?
