Democratic Solution for Iraq

Written by: Kevin Raymond on Oct 30, 2006 8:01 PM EST

We should allow the Iraqi people to vote whether they want us in Iraq or not.  If they want us there it would strengthen our cause internationally.  If they don't want us then we can show the world we are committed to democracy by honorably leaving them to sort it out.

We could also ask for a 3 month cease fire with the insurgents so that we could set up the vote with the international community monitoring it for fairness.  If the insurgents couldn't control themselves for 3 months it would show the world that they need an outside influence to keep them in line just like little kids need parents to keep them safe.  We could actually lay it out as a blanket promise that if they can keep calm for 3 months we will set up the vote.  This would put the ball in their court without changing our position.  It may also take much of the world's focus off of us and put it on the insurgents.

We want democracy in Iraq.  I think it is time to risk it.
