- How to argue?

By Jim Edwards-Hewitt on Mar 25, 2009 9:42 PM EDT

There's an article in yesterday's New York Times about "concerns" about the public option, and if you read it, almost all of them are concerns from insurance companies that they won't make as much money, and from them and Republicans complaining that the public option is "unfair competition." What's a good response to this? To me, the answer seems to be that the purpose of competition is to get us good health care, not to produce successful insurance companies, but I'd like to have more arguments in my arsenal. Any suggestions?

The argument is two fold.  The objection is self-contradictory,  and the public owns a significant part of our health care system and deserves access to it by rights.

Their objection contradicts itself becuase the insurance industry has, for all intents and purposes, locked a large and growing proportion out of their market.  Their abandonment of this part of the population indicates that insurance companies have no interest in serving that segment of the population and so there is no market there and no competition, unfair or otherwise.  The government would be stepping into a vacuum, not a market.

A lot of the value of contemporary health services comes from publicly funded research and development.  ALL taxpayers paid for it.  That a growing proportion of taxpayers are locked out by the insurance companies is unfair and ought to be a moral outrage.

and because of the budget impact of the government already playing such a large role in upward cost pressure due to the fragmented market niches with all the cherry picking going on, the larger the government insurance pool the better. We don't need to jump directly to single payer, just expand the public sector to include everyone not satisfied with their private plans.

Howard Dean lays it on the line.

After 60 years, isn't about damned time Americans are covered for any illnesses that may affect them.

Plug the black hole of health care SPENDING and start delivering care to all who require it.

good luck getting the word out about Democracyfest without the watercooler, since mention of it here would get you the boot for being off topic. How about we bring back the blog first before we kill the last sign of life here.

I meant kill the watercooler AND allow "off-topic" comments in the main thread.

- what's with DFA

By Karen Anne K on Mar 26, 2009 5:23 AM EDT

Jessica,

I was away from DFA for a long while after 2004, now I have come back, since I am angry about how Obama treated Howard and I want my efforts to go thru DFA from now on.  Plus esp. I want to keep up to date with what Howard is doing.

I managed to hang in for about three minutes with the conference call.  We were being treated like three year olds "let's have a cheer now."  wtf

So, where are the grownups talking?  What's the watercooler?

- Karen, the grownups are at the watercooler.
