Thank God for George W. Bush

Written by: Michael Kuykendall on Nov 15, 2008 10:32 AM EST

Why progressives and liberals should truly be thankful to the deity of their choice for the disastrous presidency of George W. Bush.

George W. Bush very well could be one of the most beneficial presidents in our nation’s history. This article out today about an exchange between Nicolas Sarkozy and Vladimir Putin is just one reason why;

With Russian tanks only 30 miles from Tbilisi on August 12, Mr Sarkozy told Mr Putin that the world would not accept the overthrow of Georgia's Government. According to Mr Levitte, the Russian seemed unconcerned by international reaction. "I am going to hang Saakashvili by the balls," Mr Putin declared. Mr Sarkozy thought he had misheard. "Hang him?" -- he asked. "Why not?" Mr Putin replied. "The Americans hanged Saddam Hussein." Mr Sarkozy, using the familiar tu, tried to reason with him: "Yes but do you want to end up like [President] Bush?" Mr Putin was briefly lost for words, then said: "Ah -- you have scored a point there."

George W. Bush has set the standard for what to do as the leader of a country, or any kind of leader for that matter. But I’m still of the opinion that we won’t appreciate the full impact of George W. Bush being president until many years from now. Had it not been for his questionable election and re-election to the office, the pendulum of this country wouldn’t have been pushed so far to the right that the potential to swing so dramatically left that this country would elect its first black president would not have been possible.

Had his administration not existed, the complacency of average citizens in this country, and probably other countries as well, to pay attention to how they are governed would still be a liability to those of us who would consider ourselves concerned citizens. Because of George W. Bush, a whole new generation of voters both young and old is aware of the significance of participating in the process; that their vote does make a difference. Because of George W. Bush, the unspoken rift between white people and minorities, particularly African Americans, can begin to heal. I’d have to imagine it’s different for each segment of the black population. Older African Americans can finally start to feel truly liberated from the injustices that have been suffered only because of their race at the hands of white men that hadn’t evolved enough yet. Young African Americans can finally start to feel like if they study and work hard, they too can do anything they set their minds to.

Bush did so many things incorrectly that we now know that we can and should try to do everything so much better. And it’s only just begun. Barack Obama hasn’t even taken the oath of office yet and the anticipation of all the good things to come from this country is palpable. There is again the potential for this country to lead the way in so many ways. I felt a true sense of pride for the first time in a long time to be an American the day that Barack Obama got elected. If it hadn’t been for the catalyst of George W. Bush being the worst president in this nation’s history, we may not have ever elected him.
