Update on the 2010 Campaign

Written by: Bill Hedrick on May 20, 2009 1:16 AM EDT

For those of you who don't know where my district is located, it's in southern California in one of those gerrymandered districts, divided into two very different counties.  80 percent of the district is situated in Riverside county, an hour east of Los Angeles that has been devastated by the economic collapse. We're currently at 13.2 percent unemployment - and quickly rising - along with the fourth largest foreclosure rate in the nation.  The other 20 percent is situated in southern Orange County (San Clemente, part of San Juan Capistrano, Ladera Ranch, and Coto de Caza).  Those cities are fairly affluent though their housing markets have also been negatively impacted this past year.

<!-- polls come after this -->

The families in my district clearly need a leader who is on their side and I'm committed to being that leader in 2010.

The current representative (Ken Calvert) is serving his 17th year.  He votes along strict party lines which means he voted against the Stimulus Bill, even though it will bring more jobs to this congressional district than any other in California.  He also voted against HR 1106 which will save countless homes right here in this district from going into foreclosure.  And I have no doubt he'll oppose any health care bill that comes from the Democratic side of the aisle.

I have lived in this district for almost 30 years, raised my five children here, and both my wife and I have been educators in Riverside County for over two decades so I understand what families in our region are up against and every decision I make will be with their best interests in mind.

It's Official - I'm Running in 2010!

Ok, so no one is exactly shocked to hear that I've made it official this week but I wanted to come here to this blog to post it myself since the folks here at DFA were supportive of my campaign from the beginning.

I also wanted to post a little more about myself so that you understand why I'm running and why you should care about this race.

With unemployment in Riverside County now at 13.2 percent - and growing - along with the fourth largest foreclosure rate in the nation, the families in my district clearly need a leader who is on their side and I'm committed to being that leader in 2010.

The current representative (Ken Calvert) voted against the interests of his own district when he chose to vote along strict party lines which meant he voted against the Stimulus Bill, even though it will bring more jobs to this district than any other in California.  He also voted against HR 1106 which will save countless homes right here in this district from going into foreclosure.

DCCC Targets Six Districts - Mine is One!

Written by: Bill Hedrick on Apr 3, 2009 12:40 AM EDT

Linked to campaigns: Bill Hedrick for Congress, 44th District, California

I'm excited to announce that my district is one of only six nationwide (and the only one here in California) being targeted by the DCCC in a series of radio ads being rolled out next week.

The ads will target Republican members of Congress who opposed the middle class tax cut in President Obama's economic recovery act.  These ads are the DCCC's way of taking the message of middle class tax cuts and economic recovery directly to the public in radio ads called "Tax Man" that will run in the lead up to April 15th (tax day).

My opponent Ken Calvert is one of the six Republicans being targeted for his vote against the middle class tax cut.

This is the fourth phase in the DCCC’s "Putting Families First" campaign and in each of the previous three phases, Mr. Calvert has been included in targeted radio ads highlighting his poor voting record.

At a time when substantive change is required to pull our country out the disastrous economic situation we find ourselves in today, we need our Congressional representatives putting families – not politics – first.

In vote after vote, Mr. Calvert plays politics at the expense of our working families.

When I am your representative in Washington, every vote I cast will be made with your family’s interests first on my mind.

Here's a link to the DCCC site where you can hear the ad and read more about the campaign:  http://dccc.org/blog/archives/dccc_announces_4th_phase_of_the_putting_families_first_campaign

Putting Families First

This campaign is not about putting Democratic or Republican politics first - it's about putting families first!

As a father, an educator, and a locally elected official, I understand that by putting families first, we ensure our homes are secure, our schools are advancing, and our community is thriving.  When partisan politics override what is best for our  families, our homes, schools, and communities suffer – as we unfortunately see today.

When I am your representative in Washington, every vote I cast will be made with your family’s interests first on my mind!

If you believe, as I do, that it's time to put families first, then I urge you to stand with me.  Even if you've never participated before, I'm asking that you participate now.  Visit my campaign website (www.HedrickforCongress.com) and join my campaign to help ensure that our district's families are finally being put first.

Elections are about choices and America made a clear choice last fall when they elected President Obama to lead this country.  The new administration has introduced an aggressive plan to move the country forward but needs Congress working with – not against - the president.  My opponent has voted against each and every part of the president’s plan and will continue to do so.

When asked at a recent town hall meeting why he didn’t vote for the Stimulus Bill (which will bring almost 10,000 new jobs to the district), Mr. Calvert said that he voted against it because he was not included in the discussions with the Democratic leadership and that the bill was rushed through.  However, when an audience member reminded Representative Calvert that the bank bailout had also been rushed through and that most Democrats had not been invited to participate in those discussions before voting, he said it was a different scenario.  Of course it was different – the bank bailout had been introduced by Mr. Calvert’s party.

My success in 2010 assures a more balanced view and votes I cast will be based on my district’s needs rather than strict political ideology.

Our campaign manager, Ryan Sandoval, wanted to update folks on this blog as to where California’s 44th Congressional District race currently stands, what sort of support we have in the district, what our chances of winning are, what we’ve been doing to ensure victory, and what our opponent has been up to.

We encourage you to watch the video and then make up your own mind as to whether you think our race is winnable. If you agree with us that this is a completely winnable race (given the right support), we ask that you help us out by donating to the campaign or signing up as a volunteer to help in spreading the word about Bill.

This has always been a grassroots campaign so we’re doing what we’ve done all along - reaching out and asking that the grassroots activists out there step up and help the good guy win in November!

DFA Endorsement

I am honored to have the endorsement of Democracy for America.  The support of activists committed to real change at the grassroots level will make it possible for us to convey our message of honest, responsible, and effective government--for a change--in the 44th District.

As I discuss the need to bring our brave men and women in uniform home from the war in Iraq, my opponent is silent.  When I talk about clean, renewable energy sources, Ken Calvert is too busy taking money from big oil to join in theat conversation.  And, when our campaign discusses protecting American jobs and restoring the middle class, Ken Calvert says nothing because he has no economic plan.  Now is the time for Ken Calvert’s self-serving Congressional career to come to an end.  I hope you will join me in making that a reality!

I Need Your Help and I Need it Now!!

Today, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) released its fourth annual report on the most corrupt members of Congress and my Republican opponent, Ken Calvert (CA 44 CD)  has made the list for the third year in a row.  CREW cites Calvert’s practice of earmarking for personal financial benefit, earmarking for clients of the disgraced and disbanded lobbying firm Copeland Lowery, and his illegal purchase of a parcel of public land in his district’s Jurupa area. Calvert also holds the distinction of being one of twelve on the list who is under investigation and the only one named whose constituents recently voted overwhelmingly to take recoup land that was sold to him illegally through the use of eminent domain.

I actually have a chance of winning this seat – I've been elected to local office five times within the district and I consistently win in very Republican areas because people who know me, trust me to serve their interests rather than my own.

But in order for me to win this race, I need your help and I need it now!  Please go out to my website  www.hedrickforcongress.com and volunteer to make calls to voters or to walk precincts.

Without your help, Calvert will be around to make CREW's list again next year.

Let’s not allow that to happen!
