Film screening commemorates 6th anniversary of Iraq Invasion

Neighbors & fellow progressives:

Where do we go from here with our occupation of Iraq?  President Obama has pledged to get COMBAT troops out of Iraq by 2010, but thousands will stay on beyond that.  As of 1/31/09 we have lost 4,228 American lives in addition to suffering 66,951 American casualties (DOD statistics) and the number of affected Iraqis is staggering.  And in the future, can we prevent another war like this?  Over the last 6 years I have overseen a project called FINDING OUR VOICES which is a documentary about 8 people's courageous decisions to speak out against the war in Iraq -- long before it was common to do so.  This movie underscores the importance of dissent in a democracy by hearing the intimate stories of everyday Americans who were deeply effected by 9/11 and the war in Iraq.  From a mother who lost her son on 9/11 and didn't want his legacy to be the killing of more innocent people, to a congressman (Jim Moran-D, VA), including a diplomat who resigned his post before the war, soldiers who fought in Iraq, a minister and peace activist...this movie celebrates the power of speaking your conscience.  Come join us for special screenings 3/18 and 3/19 in Waitsfield and Burlington!  Here's more:

How far would you go to stop a war?  Sacrifice your career?  Go to jail?  Risk your life?

Film Synopsis:

Dissent is a cornerstone of the American dream, from the declaration of independence to civil rights, from the end of slavery to the enfranchisement of women.  Today we are faced by a new tyranny… a war which the US government started in Iraq, a war that is costing tens of thousands of lives, and trillions of dollars, a war that betrays the ideals and international reputation that for many Americans is the source of their national identity.  New voices of dissent have, since before the war began, been raised to call the American people and government to the standards of justice and democracy on which this country was founded.  Finding Our Voices is a film that tells compelling and inspiring stories of people who proclaim with their lives that 'peace is patriotic,' and dissent the responsibility and birthright of a truly democratic people.

From a mother who lost her son at the WTC 9/11 and didn't want his legacy to be one of more innocents dying to a US Congressman…from a diplomat to soldiers who served in Iraq, from a minister to other activists -- this film reveals the sacrifice and motivation of 8 very different Americans who spoke out for peace.
