Bloomberg Bluster

Written by: Judy Ramsey on Jan 9, 2008 9:58 AM EST

The meeting in Norman on Monday, hosted by David Boren and attended by political heavyweights such as the Mayor of NYC, Michael Bloomberg and the independent Republican from Nebraska, Chuck Hagel, was nothing more than a request for us to ask the strategic and specific questions of the current political candidates for President and active participation from “We the People.”

Once again, it was the media who was the big disappointment during an opportunity to question political leaders about the state of our country. I kept waiting for the tough questions, but all were more of the same, most interested in whether or not Michael Bloomberg would announce his candidacy for President on an independent ticket.  Answers to questions began to all sound like the same generalities we hear every day, asking for bipartisan answers to the tough issues facing our nation.

In this reporter's mind, it appeared an important first stage to set up a candidacy for “someone” not satisfied with the candidates already in the race. While the overall statement coming from the forum was indeed, true, that we do, in fact, have a broken and corrupt system, and that there is no current leadership or accountability, they stopped short of making any major statements of importance. Like, hey, wouldn't it be nice to have real presidential debates that included ALL presidential candidates? Or, if you're going to talk about accountability, and the lack thereof, shouldn't impeachment be mentioned somewhere along the line?

But media coverage was reduced to more of the same, while more than 30 protesters (including 8-10 Tulsans!) stood outside with peace, impeachment and anti war signs, without the ability to ask questions, but receiving seemingly increasing support among the traffic. And hey, we'll all be waiting for the New Yorker magazine and Reuters news articles that will include our precious Joey and Maddie, beautiful baby girls of Samantha Zinn, our state coordinator for the Dennis Kucinich campaign!!
