I thought I'd start a thread for any DFA members going to the DNC. We can discuss logistics, travel, accommodations, events, plans, ideas, etc. here.
Is anyone going to Denver?
What are your plans there?
What's DFA going to do there?
I've just started looking into transportation and accommodation in Denver. Anyone have tips for places to stay there and things to do? I thought I'd go to do more interviews about Progressive Values..
- The website for the convention is at Demconvention.com
- Progressive Democrats of America have a center there with activities, speakers, etc.
any other tips out there?
Danny
do you think you could try to do a bit of liveblogging, or at least give us a 'glimpse' of the activity while you're there? I loved the blog threads about NN, but it was all after-the-fact.
I don't think I'm speaking just for myself when I say we oldtimer dfa'ers really enjoy living those moments vicariously thru you folks on the ground. that used to be a staple at DFA and I think more folks might show up here to blog (in the fashion you want them to, of course) if you try to involve the blog, connect to it a little more...
PROGRESSIVE CENTRAL at the DNC CONVENTION
Join PDA and The Nation in the heart of Denver at the Central Presbyterian Church, 1660 Sherman St.--a progressive oasis, where like-minded individuals can meet to network, share ideas, learn from the country's foremost progressives, and help build the progressive movement.
I had applied for the Bloggers Big Tent a while back but never heard anything back.
Will DFA have some sort of a central location? Like the hospitality suite and DFA booth at netroots?
I am so excited and will be blogging from there, when I can.
Hope to hear from some of you.
I think there are about 20 DFA delegates.
Things will be quite busy and even if you don't have creds, there will be a lot going on.
- Ed are you really just now getting around to securing sleeping accommodations?
By Denise in San Mateo County on Aug 3, 2008 6:42 PM EDTOr did you get some already? My contacts in the hotel industry said all rooms have been sold out for months. You might get lucky with recent cancellations. I'd hurry up if I were you unless you want to stay real far away from the convention center.

DNC, DNCC Statement on Letter Received by the Convention's Credentials Committee from Senator Obama Regarding the Florida and Michigan Delegations
Washington, DC - The DNC and the DNCC released the following statement from the co-chairs of the convention's Credentials Committee, Hon. Alexis Herman, James Roosevelt Jr. and Eliseo Roques-Arroyo:
"Today we received a letter from Senator Obama requesting that the Convention's Credentials Committee grant each delegate from Florida and Michigan a full vote. We deeply appreciate and value Senator Obama's perspective on this important issue. This matter will be the top priority for the Credentials Committee when we meet on August 24th. As always our goal is to ensure a fair process and a unified Democratic Party so that we can win in November."

are just like I said all along, they will count if they don't matter, because once they broke the rules they were never going to be allowed a final decisive role in the nomination
they had no say in the end really even though North Dakota did, so who cares how many tag along for the party
they can drop as many ballons for Hillary as they want when she gives her speech, Obama will be the nominee
you ask who is going and the no talk. I will be there but because dfa and you all talk about crap I won't blog. this website has become crap.
and you are part of it.
you are talking about what????????????????
- you are my representative linda, every vote you take will be a little bit for me
By Phil Specht on Aug 3, 2008 10:30 PM EDTour local group is talking carpool for day four
Obama is giving a great stump speech these days, if the stadium had a roof he'd blow it off
Why is it linda b doesn't want to blog at the blog for America during the DNC Convention?
note the date and time of Edwin's post - it's the way they move new threads to the fp now - it's hours or days later so the folks who write them are seldom around to have a conversation. just one more element that makes it almost impossible to HAVE a real conversation about anything, unless we're in the wc.
- it's 3 weeks until the Denver dem convention and energy is becoming the biggest issue ...
By * rdorgan on Aug 4, 2008 5:43 AM EDTObama sells out on offshore drilling
...
While campaigning in Florida yesterday, Obama told the Palm Beach Post that he would be willing to open Florida's coast for more drilling as part of a "comprehensive energy policy that can bring down gas prices.'' And what's even worse than the shift itself -- yes, sometimes compromise is necessary -- is the ridiculous claim that it will bring gas prices down. It's never necessary to say something you know isn't true.
As he says, the Gang of 10 compromise put together by five Democrats and five Republicans in the Senate would do a lot of good things, like "repeal tax breaks for oil companies so that we can invest billions in fuel-efficient cars, help our automakers re-tool, and make a genuine commitment to renewable sources of energy like wind power, solar power, and the next generation of clean, affordable biofuels.''
...

...
So, as he now sees it, "if, in order to get that passed, we have to compromise in terms of a careful, well thought-out drilling strategy that was carefully circumscribed to avoid significant environmental damage - I don't want to be so rigid that we can't get something done." Gosh, no, that would be bad. If only I could remember the last time the Democrats in Congress did any such thing, maybe I'd know just how bad. And of course, he's just undercut those Democrats who were trying to hang in there.
So what's the difference between Obama's loss of nerve and McCain's earlier switch on the same issue? In May, McCain knew offshore drilling was a step in the wrong direction, but by June, he'd seen the polling and seen the light. Now, he thinks offshore drilling is crucial.

...
There is no mystery about why Obama has now changed his mind, too, although his position seems to be that offshore drilling is still a bad idea, but we should do it anyway: A national poll taken last week showed that 57 percent of voters favor offshore drilling because 56 percent think gas prices would fall as a result. Only they wouldn't, and both candidates know it.
...
His excuse might be the worst part: "The Republicans and the oil companies have been really beating the drums on drilling," Obama said in the interview. Which might give voters the impression that anyone who beats the drums loud enough and long enough will get this same "Alright already!'' response out of him. And it might give those young voters he is counting on the idea that he's not only not as different as they thought...but maybe, just not different enough.
his cool $2mm from Bush's oil buds in May...
I thought Obama's response to the gang of ten putting together an alternative energy package that might include a tax on oil company profits (or rather loss of subsidy) in return for small careful drilling concessions was very appropriate.
if there is a big oil field north of Cuba, some of it in our waters, a Mars size platform needs to discharge the product on shore somewhere
it may well be a matter of national security to keep the Chinese from getting it, but the pipeline/refinery siting should be ecologically made not where is a section of property owned by poor people we can displace/ or some big donor who is losing his shirt in the housing downturn
All I know, it looks as if Obama is following McCain's (flip-flop) lead on this subject of oil drilling. As you know, I've defended Obama through thick and thin, including on his FISA vote, because I felt he was essentially not flip-flopping on his original position.
IMO, this oil drilling thing is another matter and I, for the life of me, can't defend Obama on it.
Well, today is Barack's birthday and I wished him a 47th happy birthday.
I've taken a lot of flak from some other bloggers on the Obama '08 blog (http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/stateupdates/gG5kph/commentary#comments ) and the flames have gotten a bit hot -- the name-calling against me. I think I'll be leaving that blog for awhile.
- New Jersey is a place (from my travels for sake of argument)
By Phil Specht on Aug 4, 2008 8:49 AM EDTthat you could site another refinery in a spot or two and no one would know, but if the Florida cane fields started making E-85 and only had to transport the fuel a short ways to a large driving population, Florida might be the perfect place for a transition to renewables
but everyone needs the facts we got from the Stephen's thread before any of that goes forward
