Sorry, Fox fans, torture is illegal

Written by: Gwynne Chesher on Aug 6, 2008 4:22 PM EDT

Apparently, fans of the Fox TV Show "24" have forgotten just exactly what America's honor is really about.  Up until the administration of fear and deceit, America was the world's leader of justice and integrity.   We are signatories of the Geneva Conventions and the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhumane or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (1994). Water boarding has for centuries been a  tool of brutal regimes and only rarely produces anything but superficial knowledge and often misleading, false information.  The Bush/Cheney administration has managed to reverse the respect of the world that we have always enjoyed, valued and resourced, by abusing detainees, ignoring America's treaties and declaring executive privilege over our constitution.

Patriotism is loving your country enough to see it's flaws and mistakes and working to correct them.  This requires some basic knowledge of our history and of our relationships with other nations.  It requires understanding of the word "honor", and of core American values of fairness and justice.

A big part of my life was spent on  military bases, and I have always been very proud to be an American, but I agree with Michelle Obama that there has not been much to be proud of for the past eight years.  Water boarding, rendition, Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib and the grievous neglect of our new veterans, are just a few of the Bush accomplishments that I am not proud of.

Some of our more frightened citizens may need to repeat, out loud, three times, "America is better than it's enemies".
