Please stop insulting Hillary and our intelligence

Written by: Gwynne Chesher on Sep 15, 2008 5:02 PM EDT

If you don't understand the differences between Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton, please do not call yourself a Democrat.  In fact, please do not call yourself an informed voter.  Any American who has bothered to research the issues has to reach the same conclusion.

Sarah Palin gave a sarcastic, no-issues speech that, if you bothered to check the facts, was a series of lies which apparently appealed to a few disappointed Hillary supporters.  But Sarah Palin claimed to have opposed the "bridge to no where", however, she was actually for the bridge, before she decided that it was going to be a political liability.  She claimed to be a supporter of legislation in favor of funding for special needs kids, when, in fact, she vetoed a bill in Alaska to fund special needs children.  She has a daughter who will soon be a teen mom, however, Palin vetoed a bill to assist homeless teenage mothers and also opposes comprehensive sex education for students. Palin supports the teaching of "creationism" in public schools and does not believe that global warming has anything to do with human activity. She claimed to have secured a profit for Alaska by selling the governor's jet on Ebay, which we now learn is also a lie. She actually left her Wasilla, Ak, $22 million in debt.

She claimed that Senator Obama has never sponsored legislation.  Another lie. As a two term state Senator, he was responsible for significant legislative accomplishments in Illinois, including Earned Income Tax Credit for Illinois families, early childhood education expansion for his state, and he worked with law enforcement officials to require the videotaping of interrogations and confessions in capital cases.  As a U.S. Senator, he worked with Senator Coburn (R), to create an easy, on-line method for citizens to learn how their tax dollars are spent and he has been a major player in ethics reform legislation in Congress. He fought for disability pay for Illinois veterans as a member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee and traveled to Russia with Republican Dick Lugar, to find and secure loose nuclear weapons.

This is a short list of Senator Obama's legislative accomplishments. He is a member of sixteen congressional committees and subcommittees, including Foreign Relations, Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs and Veterans' Affairs. He is a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School and President of the Harvard Law Review.  He  taught Constitutional Law at the University of Chicago.

Hillary Clinton is also a highly educated and experienced Senator who is quite qualified to be the President.  She is the political and ethical opposite of Sarah Palin on every issue from her devotion to women's rights to tax cuts for the middle class, not the super wealthy, and to foreign policy (assuming that Palin's foreign policy would agree with John McCain's, if she had one). Hillary would have made a fine president.

In contrast, Governor Palin holds a BA in journalism from the University of Idaho.  She was elected mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, which has a population smaller than many of our public high schools. She was elected governor of Alaska (our third smallest state, by population) less than two years ago.  She is no more ready to be the leader of the free world than I am.

If Sarah Palin's lack of education and experience doesn't bother you, remember that way too many Americans voted for George Bush because they bought into the nonsense that he was just a regular guy that they'd like to have a beer with.

If you intend to vote for one candidate over another because you think they have a better smile, attitude or hairstyle, then our democracy, our children and their futures would be better served if you stay home on election day.
