Hello from Nick the Intern

Greetings to the DFA Community,

    My name is Nick Carter and I'm the new political intern for DFA. I am a senior political science major and economics minor at the University of Vermont. At UVM, I'm a senator on student government serving on the Committee on Diversity and Environmental Ethics. Also, I enjoy going on trips with the Outing Club, kayaking, and riding at  Bolton Valley and Jay Peak as much as possible. I'm from Bethesda, Maryland and have spent considerable time in wild and crazy Plainfield, VT. I’ve enjoyed my time living in Burlington and hope to stay in the area after graduation.

 I began my internship voyage with Media Matters for America in Washington, D.C. I was the communications intern and among other things was involved with rallying colleges and universities to prevent wackos like Ann Coulter from presenting nonsense at different campuses. DFA had started up a couple months previous and constantly came up during various assignments. From Media Matters I went on to the Campaign for America’s Wilderness which involved researching and lobbying for different wilderness areas. I put out the ‘Wild News’ every morning and developed a strong interest in environmental issues. Finally, last fall I interned for the Vermont Democratic Party and was exposed to the inner-workings of Vermont politics.

The direct, personalized nature of DFA is what has brought me to the office this semester.  Issues like the Iraq War, global warming, a poorly performing economy, deteriorating social services, and misinformation in the media need to be addressed as quickly and effectively as possible. I feel that interning is a great way to donate my time and effort to addressing problems while learning valuable skills in the process. To borrow the often used phrase of a certain progressive presidential candidate, ‘change’ is certainly in the air and I look forward to being apart of DFA at this crucial time in American politics.
