Howard Dean speaks out for Gaye Symington
A partner for ObamaOctober 29, 2008As a Vermonter, I'm proud our state is poised to give Sen. Barack Obama a large margin of victory on Election Day. Vermonters across the political spectrum recognize how far off track the failed policies of the last eight years have taken our nation. And we know that an Obama administration will bring the change we need to restore our priorities at home and our leadership abroad.
But to get our nation back on track, Sen. Obama will need strong partners in the states. In Vermont, there is no stronger voice, no partner better suited to work with an Obama administration to effect real change than Speaker Gaye Symington.
Sen. Obama and Speaker Symington both will work to provide affordable, accessible health care for all Americans, reduce the control insurance companies have over our system and shift to a focus on prevention and wellness. Under Gaye's leadership, Vermont has pushed nationally recognized health care reforms, and she will finish the job of developing a better health care system as governor.
Sen. Obama and Speaker Symington share a belief in the power of renewable energy and energy efficiency to create good jobs, improve our environment and break the grip of big oil on our economy and foreign policy. As governor, Gaye Symington will ensure that our state leads the country toward a new energy future.
Both Sen. Obama and Speaker Symington believe in investing in early education, oppose No Child Left Behind's unfunded mandate and have plans to encourage more young people from low-income families to consider and prepare for college. Gaye's Bridge to Opportunity initiative provides the academic and financial support Vermont's high school students need to attend college and make connections with employers. With Gaye Symington, Vermont will finally have a governor who will partner with our schools to control costs.
I served Vermont with Gaye Symington for six years and can say with confidence that she is the leader we need at this critical moment.
Our country and our state are facing the most difficult economic challenge since the Great Depression. If we are going to weather this storm and start growing our economy again, we need honest, courageous leaders with the vision and ability to tackle the issues that will define our state and nation in the future. Barack Obama will be that leader in D.C. Gaye Symington will be his partner in Vermont.
