Jim Dean: Corporate vs. Progressive Democrats
Linked to groups: DFA Blog Network, Netroots Activism!, Blog For America
It's been a long primary season, so it is almost easy to forget that congressional primaries in some states are only just getting started.
Next week is the Virginia primary and there is one tried and true progressive who needs our support to win against a corporate, machine-style Democrat.
DFA members on the ground in Virginia have been working hard to elect Leslie Byrne to Congress since the beginning. We've knocked on doors, recruited volunteers, and made phone calls providing people power and face to face contact. Now it is up to you to back local DFA members up with the resources to win.
Contribute $20.08 today to put Leslie over the top!
Leslie's district went to Bush by just one point in the 2004 election, making this seat ripe for a Democratic pick-up in 2008. But first Leslie must beat a defense contractor who works for one of the worst war-mongering profiteering firms in the business. He just decided to be against the war- now that it is politically convenient.
Leslie has strong roots in this community, having served the people as a former congresswoman, state representative and state senator. Time and again, Leslie has stuck to her progressive principles and stood up against the odds to provide leadership.
We can make sure Leslie adds to the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
Contribute $20.08 to elect a progressive leader and beat a corporate Democrat.
Leslie's primary opponent's "pay-to-play" tactics have him caught in a questionable position. His employer has potentially violated federal election commission rules on his behalf. He has been described as the candidate who will most aptly "fill the shoes" of retiring Republican congressman Tom Davis.
That's not what America wants. We want a Democrat who will stand up and fight for what they believe in. Not another Bush-Democrat who will pay lip-service to the left and then stab them in the back in favor of the big-money corporate special interests that fund their campaigns.
Take action today and you will make the difference for Leslie Byrne. Her primary is next week. Let's make sure she has the resources she needs to win.
Contribute $20.08 to put a progressive in Congress.
Thank you for taking action today,
-Jim

By Susan Rowe on Jun 7, 2008 12:32 AM EDTAll of my campaigns don't show up on my profile page so I can't cross-link the post. I hope HQ fixes that bug soon.
Someone has to say it, in light of Hillary's endorsement and Barack's nomination:
We're all Deaniacs now.
---
Thanks to Barack for keeping Howard on as chair. It's a brilliant political move.
I think it would have been suicide to replace Howard - at least with the netroots -chances are he's been replaced but kept the title -- just being realistic (cynical sp?) here...

I doubt he'll get ALL her supporters, since we don't know exactly how many were voting against BO.
I think BO needs progressives more...and progressives want to really see change actually happening and want to hear about an end to war and a nuclear free zone. De-nuking everyone is certainly a good idea..it could at least be begun.
Mike, I liked your platform. Yes, it's idealistic, but isn't BO supposed to be that?
S/O mentioned that Israel will collapse by itself. I wouldn't bet on that. LOL Altho it appears the U.S. is collapsing, maybe taking Israel down with it, or vice versa. But now isn't Israel talking with Syria?
Full HC speech on MSNBC at 1PM left coast. This is the real Hillary...not shabby at all. Their fight and her slams were not even as vicious as some *discourse* was here on the blog.
Outside of this blog, I don't know any BO supporters who have talked so viciously about HC. Or vice versa.
*********************
And why is BO called the AA, black candidate? Why hasn't he been referred to as the first bi-racial man running? Are words important? Is this question even important?
HC definitely needs to be encouraged by BO to write the health care legislation. Or maybe a new cabinet position dealing solely with womens' issues.
Daniel, do you have a link for that?
Yeah, I think Bilderberg is very much in the picture. The power brokers run the world.
Running off in secret is not an auspicious start for having a transparent gov't.
And he's off golfing during her speech...he's not even watching it. This smacks of lack of respect. He had his lackeys put something up on his website.
Words words words...I'm interested in actions.
Golfing is fine - but not during her speech. Jeez.
Anni, I'm with you on being cynical. I think Tewes will be running the show...Howard's being kept to keep us happy. He wasted no time bringing in Tewes.
Time will tell.........
- Tewes was a big part of winning a national campaign. Howard will welcome the help.
By Phil Specht on Jun 7, 2008 2:52 PM EDTFirst you want him leading the charge, then when he acts you complain seashell, which is it?
for the third time in my life saw a tornado pass by (this about three miles away)
an inch of rain in about 20 minutes, it stopped, I stepped out of the house and there it was at Pikes Peak State Park next to a radio tower, so I could get perspective, looked maybe only a couple of hundred yards wide, very near my church so I'm going to see if anyone needs help
when it hit the big bluff at the edge if the river it picked up and I don't know if it came down in Prairie du Chien, but all the sirens were sounding
I'll check back in later. I didn't even lose power.
how about at least one round of applause instead of the negativity?
yyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad you're OK Phil. Sighting tornadoes that close to home -- WOW!
We really don't know how much power Dean will retain. We don't know a lot of stuff yet. I understand why he brought Tewes in.
By "leading the charge" I meant addressing bush/Iran right away...and maybe talking impeachment.
But you have a point. Rome wasn't made in a day...but war with Iran could start in a minute.
I think the rest can be addressed in a more timely manner. I don't feel the same way about war and killing. He could at least make a short speech about doing everything in his power to stop the bush madness.
He could even put in a call to Ach, couldn't he? I mean, wouldn't that be a nice gesture of willingness? Maybe I'm just naive to think that people should talk nicely to and about their *enemies.*
And I winced when he referred to the democratic party as "my party." Are words important or not? And which ones? And who does the picking of what's what? Are opinions really worth anything?
I believe actions speak louder than words. And I'm using way too many words today. LOL
- paine I was right under the center of the cell and the tornado was on the SW corner
By Phil Specht on Jun 7, 2008 3:08 PM EDTthe same tornado has justytouched down again and is on the ground just west of Boscabel WI
it is following the WI river
I am thinking the tornado is a metaphor for the storm come out of the Iowa caucuses...and you we witness to that event, too. Hoping you friends and neighbors are safe and sound.
...I'd rather Barack be there even if in secret than NOT be there and have them doing whatever they are doing - at least he's in the loop. We will have to get used to him being inclusive to everyone, I believe that is his core message.
You sure have had your share of tornadoes, Phil. We were under a tornado watch here last evening but thankfully, none appeared.
Please be safe.
Must be an adrenaline rush and a sense of ... being subject to a real force that nothing could stop. Glad it was a near miss.
Thank goodness you're safe. They are so scary.
I wrote last post on previous thread that Chuck Todd said that the Clintons shoudn't have "allowed" Dean and his grassroots to take over the DNC. They didn't "allow" us, they fought every inch of the way, it's just that they lost. I wonder how long it will take the "Todds" to realize there has been a battle going on right under their noses.
- Russert talked about Gore as vice president.
By Pat in Colorado on Jun 7, 2008 3:23 PM EDTLots of speculation, lots of opinions, but what's great is the involvement, the passion, the solid recognition that we have to do something if we want this country to be what it can and should be. And Hillary did speak to that powerfully today.
That she didn't speak to the person who is Barack Obama is who Hillary is. She isn't generous or gracious or warm. That doesn't mean that she hasn't made wonderful strides for women and men in recognizing that we should be and can all be what we hope to be in realizing our talents.
Never again the passivity, indifference, and cynicism that says leave it to the politicians, or they're all corrupt and my vote means nothing.
If we want to survive as a species on the planet, we do have to make enormous changes, examine our values, cooperate, and revere life more than money, which isn't the case right now.
It's okay not to like someone as a politician, to in fact, disagree and criticize. What's not okay, I think is to label, stereotype, deceive, and name call. But, those are my values. To do those things seems to me to sow the seeds of sadness, fear, and hatred. I don't see that here.
Hope you will be okay, Phil. Tornadoes are frightening and potentially disastrous. Global warming? Take good care of you and yours, and may we all do the same.
One last thought: the nuclear family as Hillary, Chesea, Bill, and Hillary's mother represent it seems to me to be fragile, sad. It's too much to ask that we all walk this world alone or with only a couple of people beside us. We really do need each other.
Must say I think Al Gore would be great as Veep candidate. Schweitzer is my first choice, but Schweitzer would have to do the learning curve with the US of A people like Obama has to. Gore is a known quantity and has the experience, even to those who haven't been paying attention.
Beautiful country out your ways, Phil.

Obama In Heated Conversation With Lieberman
<
I hope the Senator from Connecticut is reconsidering his past ways and quits the Senate.
I hope Barack was just as intimidating as the report suggests.
Just listened to Russert, Keith, and Tweety (think it was their voices because they didn't show who was talking) and they summed up my sentiments exactly and that doesn't happen very often!
Since I don't have toolbar, hope this appears as a hyperlink...

Very good point about only 3 out o' the last 10 POTUS where Democrats.
Yes we can...take the WH, if we come together...AND WE SHOULD!
Tornados all over the place yesterday. Grand Rapids has their annual Festival of the Arts this weekend and this year, as in past years, the weather is pretty grim.
Very heavy rain, winds, a few funnel clouds (under a tornado watch for the last 2 days).
We are so sparsely populated in my area, tornados tear up a lot of trees. Buildings and people haven't been hurt in years. Wildlife and livestock sometimes take a beating.
We watch the cloud movement and get really worried when the clouds start swirling in circles and cloud fingers start reaching for the ground. Yesterday, we saw one forming and a bunch of trees were knocked down a couple of miles downwind.
Welcome to west-central michigan. It is incredibly beautiful amongst the fields, woods, rivers and steams. But winters are tough, there are very few services (you earn to live with your neighbors), and summer storms are intense (blow up quickly and do a lot of damage).
That is why conservatives do so well here. The mythical rugged individualist with the restrictive social customs. But everyone is incredibly generous with anything they have and are quite forgiving of character flaws.
interesting people
...but can yo' grab a six pack from the cooler at bar-time?
Every summer I used to visit my aunt's cottage on right on the beautiful beach of Lake Michigan just west of Holland. It was so beautiful and quiet, probably no so much now. The sound of the waves onshore was memorizing.
I hear that area is a state park now.
and Bill Moyers --
Legendary journalist Bill Moyers electrified an audience of more than 3,500 in Minneapolis this morning calling the media reform movement "the most significant citizens' movement to emerge in this new century."
Watch Moyers' speech now:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Y0r71L7cojE
The reason I think keeping Howard on at the DNC through the election is a brilliant move is not because of shoring up the grassroots (which is does), but because it is clear, through the DNC's first general election ad and Howard's own words on the talk shows, that Howard really really wants to beat John McCain and the Republicans. Howard is a great bulldog campaigner.
CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP!!!!!!!
Yes, Moyers was excellent last night.
*****************
Have you all noticed that there are many many more ÅA's on talk shows...all over the media....since BO started his run?
This is wonderful! He's already bringing AAs to the forefront and I hope he addresses the prison system as well along with education etc.
I'd like to replace my legs with something else but I can't find the place to do it, even in edit. Anyone know how? I can't even delete the photo.
Click on your name to bring up your preferences and account information. You should find an update image link which lets you uplink an image from your own computer or select one that's in the group files or link another URL. It's a replacement process or substitution; not a removal. I think the tag is "change icon."
Al Gore has already said he wouldn't be interested in a cabinet post and I would assume he'd refuse a VP slot.
He's not endorsing for a good reason. Anyone wanna guess why?
Hey Phil glad you are OK. Whew that was close. Just got the announcement over the TV here - Cook and DuPage included in the warning.
Bro and sis are snoozing. We'll head back to the hospital tonight. Tomorrow they will transfer her to a nursing rehab facility for about a week, maybe two.
Getting dark here and windy. Miss San Francisco where we share our water with whoever needs it.
