Civil Disobedience
Linked to groups: Blog For America, blog for America Test and Poll Group
I grew up in the deep South of the late 50s and 60s and experienced firsthand a little of the effort of the black community's successful integration into the white world. They were always polite, but they did not always follow the law. Picture for example the lunch counters in North Carolina where sit-ins occurred. It is hard to think back to those days -- imagine a world in which only white people could sit at a lunch counter. Today it sounds downright ludicrous. But that's the way it was. It was the law. But it was a bad law. So they politely and respectfully ignored the law, following the lead of others before them, in particular M. Gandhi in India pursuing independence from Britain.
Today we Bloggers for America find ourselves in a place where a new 'law' has come to pass on our beloved blog. The new law states that we will blog ONLY on the headlined topic, or risk having our comments banished to the "Water Cooler" (and all that connotes) where our comments remain for twelve hours till they are permanently removed. This is a bad law. It stifles conversation, breaking news, the ability to express ourselves, and to build community. I believe it is also censorship.
So I ask that everyone join me in practicing civil disobedience on BFA. Sure, our posts will be whisked away to the Water Cooler. But someone will have to read them, make a determination, then physically move them. My guess is they will become tired and bored of this activity and eventually give it up. Please join me! Put your posts, no matter how personal, no matter how 'trivial,' no matter how totally off topic, on the current, latest 'front thread.' If it gets moved, it gets moved, what have you lost? And we just might (might?) get our blog back :~) someday.
And got "Access Denied"
Water cooler is a derogatory term. Slackers hang out at the office water cooler.
.... Sure, it’s a neat little lexiconian phrase that people in media can use and it’s sure got a nice twang to it and all, but really, honestly, did you ever stand by the watercooler and discuss the day’s events and drink cup after cup after cup after cup of water out of those annoyingly-cheap conical paper-cups that they make you pee into at the doctor’s office?
No, I didn’t think so.
Find me someone who actually does stand around a watercooler and talk about what they saw on TV last night or how they think Bush is doing in his second term or what they did this past weekend or why they’re wearing pumps instead of heels and I’ll give you someone who (a) gets no work done, (b) goes to the bathroom every fifteen minutes, and (c) has really great looking skin due to the neverending imbibing of H20 every second of every day.
Find me someone who actually doesn’t stand around a watercooler and talk about what they saw on TV last night or how they think Bush is doing in his second term or what they did this past weekend or why they’re wearing shoes instead of boots and I’ll give you someone who (a) is excelling in their career, (b) has oily looking skin, and (c) is really going somewhere in this here corporate world of America. ....
with Edwin, the first Woolworth where sitins took place was just up the street from his theatre. They were in the process of making a museum out of it. I wept. Those were some very brave peeps!
lovely post anni. One good piece of news is that the wc threads are archived and not permanently gone, making them accessible is on the 'to do' list.
Thankful that's a might long todo list and I'm not holding my breath on this one-after all it was promised last week, then IT went on vacation. Till I can pull up my old posts, the posts are 'trashed' in my mind.
Long time no post, although I have lurked now and then...unfortunately between moving to Asia and coming up to speed in the new office here I haven't done much in the way of blogging at all. But I did start lurking and finally posting on dKos recently, but have always liked the 'small town' feel of BFA too. I was dismayed over the rocket/Robert wars and never joined up at Howard Empowered in hopes that BFA would find its footing again, warts and all --
But jeez, with the 'watercooler' stuff and comments being moved without warning this place takes more effort to follow then the most complicated of embedded threads at Big Orange. If the goal was to completely remove the sense of free-wheeling, free-thinking community, then HQ is succeeding.
my rapidly depreciating American $0.02.
Hey Hypatia -- where are you in Asia -- we love to read posts from people's travel around here. Write us a long one - where are you? What are you doing? As much as you are comfortable sharing.
Comments deleted at the water cooler? Change the name to Democracy for dfa (deciders), and put more flags on the logo.
delete....... (off progressive topic)
let me do the work for ya:

and re; your post on another thread about dfa supporting a republican in Vermont - just who was that, anyway? and how many times would this make it that Pollina has split the ticket here? he's a good guy, but his arrogance has given us two terms of jimbo - and that is very, very bad. Pollina could actually get something done if he worked with progressive dems rather than against them.
Remember, despots will be suffering from slacker megalomania! This means that we will be suffering from them having that condition! Despots know to crush all dissent! Attacking freedom of speech and freedom of the press is the fast track to brainwashing fools into following!
