Just The Facts!

Written by: Stander for State Representative on Sep 21, 2008 12:46 PM EDT

We have heard from both parties' presidential and vice presidential candidates, and now it is time we must ask ourselves:  Who is telling the truth and who is telling "half truths" or misrepresenting the facts?  As a teacher, I do know this:  Politicians talk about education every election and yet very little is actually done to improve education in this country when they get to office.  Florida was lucky to have had a governor, Bob Graham, who also started out as a candidate for State Representative with an education platform, and when elected, and for the rest of his political career, worked tirelessly for education reform.  When he was Governor, Florida schools were in much better shape than now, and he followed through on his promises.

Now, Florida is 50th out of 50 states in what we spend per child on public education!  The state last year cut our education budget $300 million dollars, and I do not believe that is the end of the cuts to come!  We passed a Class Size Amendment when on paper looks wonderful, but was never properly funded, and Governor Jeb Bush had no intention on funding it!  That was recorded in his own words and voice when he was running for a second term!

It seems that our Republican friends seem to think that people should be able to choose where they go to school - publc or private.  The reality is that the voucher people will receive will not even come close to covering what private school actually costs, and then the public schools will lose that money.  I believe they are working towards the society that our President George W. Bush referred to at a White House dinner during his first term of office, "the haves and the have nots"!

That is not the America I was born into nor the America I want to live in.  It is time for a change!  We need to change who is in change our leaders - we need to change our priorities - or we are going to lose the values and ideals America was founded upon.  Dig into the issues - check out what has been done under the current administrations, both nationally and in Florida, and decide which candidates really support what you think is important to our country.  And remember, our children ARE our future!  The bottom line should NOT be money, it should be our children!

Please support me for State Representative in FL District 110, either with your vote or a contribution.  Stand up for children with me, Nancy Stander.  We DO need a teacher in the House!
