October 7th Candidate Clips
Hi Everyone!
My name is Dave Volain and I am one of DFA's interns this fall. I will be sending out candidate clips, such as the following, on a regular basis in order to keep everyone up to date on the buzz about our candidates in local and national media.
25th Congressional debate
10-7-08 News 10 Now Joleene Des Rosiers
Candidates including Dan Maffei were asked about trust and money, the bailout, and a government mandated
program that would automatically deduct from your paycheck so that you
had cash in your later years. Every answer had the answer.
Seniors Could Decide Maffei, Sweetland Race
10-6-08 WROC-TV Ali Touhey
"We need to make sure that we keep an eye on these nursing homes and
know that they are getting the quality care and make sure that there is
the proper monitoring and oversight, to make sure that seniors can grow
old with the most dignity that we can possibly give them," said Maffei.
Silencing independent voices in Maine politics
10-6-08 Bangor Daily News Laurie Dobson
“Coordinated campaigns” aside, there was true distinction shown in the
efforts of myself and Herbert Hoffman, both independents, to offer
voters an actual choice for change. Because of our alternative
platforms, Mainers had a brief opportunity to reject the Congress’
anointed opportunists, Susan Collins and Tom Allen, with their
corporate collusion and their failure to protect the residents of their
state of Maine.
NFIB spends $1M in ads vs. Allen, Franken
10-6-08 The Hill Aaron Blake
The political action committee of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) launched nearly $1 million in TV ads against Democratic Senate candidates Al Franken in Minnesota and Rep. Tom Allen in Maine this week.
Collins up eight in Democratic poll
10-6-08 The Hill Brendan Sasso
Sen. Susan Collins (R) leads her Democratic challenger, Rep. Tom Allen,
49-41, according to a new poll taken for the Democratic Senatorial
Campaign Committee (DSCC).
ME-Sen: Inching Closer
10-6-08 Swing State Project Blogger: James L.
There are no direct trend lines available for the Mellman poll, but the
DSCC says that Collins was leading by 15 points in their previous round
of polling. While these numbers still aren't great, they both show why
this race isn't completely off the map.
New Maine Poll Shows Allen Gaining On Collins
10-6-08 DSCC Matthew Miller
Maine Democratic Senate candidate Tom Allen has closed Republican
Senator Susan Collins’ lead to eight points and now trails only 49% to
41%, according to a new poll taken for the Democratic Senatorial
Campaign Committee. Collins previously led by 15 points, but has seen
her lead shrink as Allen has campaigned across the state.
Rice receives strong rating from National Rifle Association
10-7-08 Oklahoma City Business News
Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Andrew Rice has received an “A-” rating
from the National Rifle Association. Rice received this rating from the
National Rifle Association because he believes gun ownership is a
constitutional right guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the Bill of
Rights.
You’ve Come A Long Way, Andrew!
10-6-08 Oklahoma City Business News
“Just another example of Andrew Rice doing and saying anything to win,” says Kivett. In
just two short years, Andrew Rice has experienced a remarkable change
of heart when it comes to the Second Amendment. He’s gone from “a
proven enemy of gun owners’ rights” as described by the Oklahoma Rifle
Association and indifferent, if not outright hostile toward gun owners’
and sportsmen’s rights as described by the National Rifle Association,
to a gun-toting supporter of the Second Amendment.
If, Hypothetically, Two Senate Seats Were to Open Up . . .
10-6-08 Washington Post Chris Cillizza
With national polls suggesting that the Democratic ticket of Barack Obama and Joseph R. Biden Jr. has moved into a clear lead in the race for the White House, party strategists are beginning to look ahead to who might replace each man in the Senate if they do prevail on Nov. 4.
Minner in Europe for trade mission
10-6-08 News Journal Ginger Gibson
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jack Markell said he sees the trip
as an opportunity to strengthen ties with companies that do business in
the state.
Noriega knocks Cornyn over donations
10-6-08 Dallas Morning News Kelley Shannon
Democrat Rick
Noriega's campaign suggested Monday that despite his claims to the
contrary Republican Sen. John Cornyn is cozy with Wall Street investors
and bankers who contribute millions to his campaigns.
WA-08: US Chamber Launches Pro-Reichert TV Ad Blitz
10-6-08 Daily Kos Blogger: McJoan
The nation's biggest business lobbies are putting big bucks into a TV
campaign to re-elect GOP Rep. Dave Reichert and fend off his formidable
Democratic challenger, former Microsoft manager Darcy Burner.
And the Sierra Club Backs the Bailout and Sits Out on Reichert Race
10-6-08 Open Left Blogger: Matt Stoller
One of the most predictably irritating parts of the last week was hearing that environmental groups - including the Sierra Club - were lobbying for the bailout bill because it had tax credits for solar and wind power.
POLLS: Democrats Lead in Seven Marquee Races
10-6-08 DCCC Blogger: Josh Kurtz
In North Carolina's 8th district, teacher Larry Kissell
(D) led Rep. Robin Hayes (R)
49
percent to 41
percent.
Local congressional races are close
10-6-08 Miami Herald Lesley Clark
new poll suggests an increasingly competitive race for Congress in
South Florida, with none of the Republican incumbents polling above 50
percent. The survey, conducted for WSCV Telemundo 51, shows two
of the Democratic challengers -- former Hialeah Mayor Raul Martinez and
former Miami-Dade Democratic party chief Joe Garcia -- coming within 5
points of the incumbents.
House Race Roundup
10-6-08 Daily Kos Blogger: Brownsox
The brothers are locked in the races of their life - Lincoln against
former Hialeah mayor Raul Martinez, and Mario against Orange to Blue
Democrat Joe Garcia, the former chair of the Miami-Dade County
Democratic Party.
