It has rained hard for many hours and flooding is now occuring. Ironically those evacuated may be in more danger now than if they stayed. It is an ongoing event. Wonder what the Republicans will do now that the needs are starting to show up and they have thousands of troops in the wrong place to "stop looting". They need to pick up chain saws and sand bags instead of small arms.
sex education and birth control are not
but I doubt any voters will make the decision of who to vote for on the issue as those are hardened positions or nothing you talk about at someone's front door
plus Republicans thrive on "low information" voters, so it is back to the DFA plan of School Board candidates to get science back into schools including biology
the same folks are evolution deniers that are abstinence only, it is a free country they can home school ,but this country will never have a competitive work force without public schools that teach science
- radar indicated rainfall totals NE of Alexandria are incredible
By Phil Specht on Sep 2, 2008 4:55 AM EDTunless you live in Florida and just saw the same thing happen with Faye
Lat's have the science based discussion of what the known effects will be of the current anthropogenic global warming to extremes in weather.
Iowa just went through a "500" year flood but no one in their right minds would think it will be 500 more years before those crests are hit again.
This country needs to have a serious discussion of land use planning not driven by developers greed.
Katrina was a national disaster of the highest order, and a natural disaster on that scale as well, but the human response by the Bush Administration that reavealed the callous disregard for the poor and disposessed should be seared in our national conscience and juggling one day of a convention can't attone. Never Forget.
- South Carolina should be the destination of IA and WI National Guard
By Phil Specht on Sep 2, 2008 5:46 AM EDTnow on standby heading for LA. The pretend concern change of schedule for residents of LA by delegates in Gustav response was all about not embarassing reminders of Katrina for the Republicans, but just because Hanna will hit after they go home from St. Paul doesn't mean Guardsmen aren't the proper response to natural disaster.
FEMA trailers are still showing up here in IA (seven yesterday) and they are still welcome for those who have been displaced and living with relatives and friends.
Put the guns down and start delivering water and shelter.
Kudos to the Army Corp. of Engineers for rushing the levee repairs to completion.

Poll: Obama gets post-convention 'bounce'
|
Updated 50m ago By Susan Page, USA TODAY
ST. PAUL — The DNC convention boosted Americans' views of Barack Obama as a strong leader who "shares your values" and can manage the economy and Iraq, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll taken Saturday and Sunday finds.
Republican John McCain's advantage in handling terrorism was dramatically reduced, and his "unfavorable" rating ticked up to its highest level this year. ... •Obama eliminated McCain's advantage as "a strong and decisive leader." By 46%-44%, those surveyed says that characteristic applies more to Obama than McCain. Before the convention, McCain held an 8-point advantage. Obama has a 13-point advantage as someone who "shares your values," almost double the edge he held before. ... |
Obama has a 19-point lead in managing the economy.

- Grandma would rather go to jail than return library book with sex info
By floridagal . on Sep 2, 2008 1:49 AM EDTAs a former teacher, this regressive mindset worries me. There is too much of attempted censorship in libraries now. School librarians especially have to be so careful of what they order.
Grandmother would go to jail over book, but judge won't make her a martyr.
Serious stuff.
