- It's Over

By Joan In Florida on Sep 3, 2008 5:02 PM EDT

and it's been over for quite a long time.

Obama is staying consistently ahead in all major polls.

Things are getting more than "over" for McCain, we are winning many more seats in the  House and the Senate to help BO in his agenda.

I put mine out a few weeks ago and folks slow down as they go by.  it's still the only sign on the street - I traveled around a bit last weekend and there were ZERO McCain signs and I haven't seen a single bumper sticker for him, either.

It's still too early for the polls to mean anything.  It's either going to get worse for McSame during his convention or it will even things out.  Palin SHOULD be a major stumbling block for the campaign, but what the heck, Bush was re-elected, so I never count on people seeing what's in front of their eyes.

- Tired Of The Soap Opera

By raehart on Sep 3, 2008 5:28 PM EDT

Have not watched any tv since Mon, except local news thinking I would be escaping hearing about repug convention.  Wrong, I just hear Gov Huntsmen state that Palin would give a world class speech or something to that effect.  Yeah a speech that was written for Romney, with remarks added in to attrack women.  I hear Palin is quite adept at using a teleprompter.  This will be an acting job pure and simple.

I see on the internet that Palin's daughter and her future hubbie have been greeted by McCain, why do they keep pushing the children down our throats if they do not want them talked about.  Also why do they put that innocent special needs child in their photo ops.

Any bets on how many times Rudy will mention 911.

This is a soap opera.  It is bizarre.

Seen a photo of repug convention.  Why are republicans all old white men, and why do the women all have Stepford Wife deer in the headlights look.

Palin released a date (sept 11 - how convenient) that her son would be deploying and to where exactly.  My husband (former naval officer) pointed to her and said *oh no, that is not allowed*.

- Double Standard

By raehart on Sep 3, 2008 7:23 PM EDT

I totally agree children should not be pinpointed in campaigns.  However I do believe there is a double standard.

From Salon

Quote of the day

I don't usually engage in these scenarios, but I'll do it here. If the Obamas had a 17 year-old daughter who was unmarried and pregnant by a tough-talking black kid, my guess is if that they all appeared onstage at a Democratic convention and the delegates were cheering wildly, a number of conservatives might be discussing the issue of dysfunctional black families.

- Romney

By raehart on Sep 3, 2008 7:37 PM EDT

So I read Romney is going to take on Michelle tonight in his speech.  Stating he has always loved his country.  Isn't this sexist?  Anyway Mr. Mormon niceguy is going to trash a wonderful mother, faithful wife.  Guess he thinks women should steal other women's husbands, be former drug addicts, hide one of their children on the campaign trail because they are the wrong color, and lie constantly.

What a pompous p***k.

Running mate will speak as someone unconcerned with public opinion.

Romney's attacking the media too in his speech. If they don't want to campaign against Obama that's more than we could have begged them for.

I'm waiting for the story about how Palin managed to get her hands on the `1.2 million the Dem. Mayor of Anchorage wanted from the Fed. gov't. for a roof on a sports center, I think.   Somehow the money was sidetracked to add a kitchen on to the Assembly of God church in Bussilla instead.   Maybe Fed. funds going to a church might meet Brokaw's standard.    I don't remember where I read it, but it's something I hope reaches Keith.

By publius on Sep 3, 2008 10:13 PM EDT

That Hawaii had a GOP Lady Governor to advocate for Alaska's Palin.  She gave a good account of herself and the Delaware bit was a touche'.

Yes, Senators do grapple with national and international issues that mayors and governors aren't tasked with.  Did President LBJ reaaly say things could be worse - he could be a mayor.

Romney is off the deep end, may he sink away.

Rudy dissing community organizers, he would wouldn't he.  Obama present votes in Illinois Senate are a weak spot.  Rudy about 15 minutes into speech and I haven't heard 9-11 yet.

I actually feel very sorry for the Palin kids - particularly Bristol, the 17 yr old.  I think the Palins, McCains and the GOP are exploiting the entire situation.  My husband is watching the coverage (I just can't) and just said how truly sad it is to see the pregnant teenager sitting there on display.

Can you imagine how Obama would be treated by the press if he:

  • had a pregnant teen daughter,
  • was under investigation for misuse of power in his own state
  • had dated a stripper called the Flame of Florida
  • had left his crippled first wife for a younger, wealthier one
  • and had belonged to a party that advocated secession from the U.S.?

Now I know why this particular puppet was chosen from the fragrant bouquet of puppets available to McCain.  Alaska Oil.  Follow the money...again.

So fai it's oil oil oil.  Waiting to hear about the shrinking middle class and health care.

Lots of Obama bashing.  Lying about Obama's record.

Cool!  Her nose has just grown two inches!

I have avoided calling Palin a bitch.  But she sure is giving a great imitation of one.

Ooh, Obama is worried about following the law!  What kind of a leader is that?

To be honest I thought she was going to make a case for why people should support her.  Instead she is just giving the standard republican fire hydrant speech.

- Is Mockery a Campaign Strategy?

By donna in evanston on Sep 3, 2008 11:13 PM EDT

John Knowles wrote in A SEPARATE PEACE that "sarcasm is the protest of the weak person."  Or something like that.

Palin is finished now and I don't know what she has added to the campaign dialogue except some snark and some more lying lies.  And now she is using her baby as a prop...along with the rest of her out of place family...and her shotgun wedding gum chewing son in law.

But all is not lost.  McSame himself has just arrived on the scene.  He wants to know 'if he made the right choice for Vice President?'

Jeez, John.  Don't ask us.  You should have vetted her first and then you wouldn't have to ask..

- weak response from obama campaign

By mary vb on Sep 3, 2008 11:21 PM EDT

The Obama campaign responds to Tracy Flick's speech:

The speech that Governor Palin gave was well delivered, but it was written by George Bush's speechwriter and sounds exactly like the same divisive, partisan attacks we've heard from George Bush for the last eight years.  If Governor Palin and John McCain want to define 'change' as voting with George Bush 90% of the time, that's their choice, but we don't think the American people are ready to take a 10% chance on change," said Bill Burton, Obama Campaign Spokesman.

- They're Smart not to Critique Harshly

By donna in evanston on Sep 3, 2008 11:30 PM EDT

As much as it may sicken me to say it, tonight is Palin's night.  She may yet win that darn student council seat!

Seriously (or srsly, as we kids and cats like to say,) Obama and Biden are wise to let Palin's speech sink it...for the moment.  Tomorrow they can say what they really think.

- Great sarcastic wit.

By publius on Sep 3, 2008 11:30 PM EDT

Regardless of who wrote the lines, her down home sarcasm is impressive.

Read earlier link to Lakoff.  He warns not to underestimate Palin as a candidate.

Robert Novak credits McCain choice as political genius.

Time will tell on how smart it was, but no other choice would have drawn this attention to their convention.

Democrats ought not to focus on her, just remind Americans of the results of the policies she rubber stamps.

The eastern-centric media has a problem with folks from the hinderlands. Montana Governor would have been an analogous choice for the Democrats  experience wise.  No way he would have gotten the same treatment.

I thought much of the media hyper-critical-vindictive Hillary coverage was mostly trying to get Bill Clinton to go away.  They had tried, unsuccessfully, since 1992 to run him off.  Palin coverage confirms gender bias drips and spills from the MSM.

Anybody notice anything odd about this part of the transcript of the Palin speech released to the press?

Starting in January, in a McCain-Palin administration, we're going to lay more pipelines ... build more new-clear plants ... create jobs with clean coal ... and move forward on solar, wind, geothermal, and other alternative sources.

state, and national dems.

Caught most of Palin's speech when we returned.  She brought down the house.  They loved her, the snark, the cliches, the one liners, the mockery.  Am really sick of this kind of campaigning, but the public is used to it, and the Republicans went crazy.

Obama and Biden have their work cut out for them.  It is now about personality, culture, and sound bytes, just like it was with Bush.  Will it work again?  Certaninly with the true believers there in the convention hall.  I watched one woman mouth, I love her.

Here we go again, folks.
