The Watercooler for 10/22/09 9:00 AM
DFA's home for a free form, open-ended discussion of what matters most to committed progressive activists.
Watercooler resets everyday at 1am, 9am and 5pm. Past threads can be found in the Watercooler Archive
spent an interesting day yesterday with a fellow from Montana who had a bit of a cross between HuJo and Annilow's musings (hates Geithner, loves Schweitzer) and had total distain for Baucus even as he reckoned Republicans would nominate somebody so far right Baucus was safe.
But these are politicians.....back door stuff and all that....Obama doesnt strike me as much of a street fighter, but he may be smooth operator and negotiator........we shall see.
Sadly, we are dealing with peoples lives here at home on the domestic front (jobs, health care, etc) and overseas in this foolish foreign policy of ours...........
Bring the troops home....put em to work building mass rail and transit.......its safer and more productive.
Showtime is coming !!!
So how about the great news about the paycuts for the top executives of the companies we bailed out? No good cartoons for that out there anywhere? I'm jazzed.
Rep. Wiener was on Washington Journal this morning taking calls. One was from a Republican that was really complimentary about what Congress is trying to do. Another was an Indy that had all of her facts wrong. I kind of felt sorry for her, so much bad info still out there.
I heard this on NPR yesterday afternoon--and thought WOW! Time to "grab a mop" with him. (From his OFA webcast yesterday)--we do have more power than we realize if we would just all at least do what we can--and quit throwing the mops in the trash!
Things are starting to move. Obama is coming to Norfolk next Tuesday and I am gonna be there!!
Am I happy or what.
Anyway, Creigh has been all over the place and making news. He has a great ad up with Obama.
Turnout is the key, you know anyone in Va?? Call them, ask them to bring 5 people to the polls!!
We are gonna do this!!
I'll see who I can reach out to in the area. I know mostly folks in the northern part.
Have a blast lindab, I'm so jealous.
90%? Do you think the CEO's will stand for this? The corps run this country. Who's going to enforce the cuts? I think it's great, but these, again, are words. I'd like proof. How about making these words into law? That would be a start toward making believers out of cynics like me. Than again, maybe there's already s/t in place to force them to take the cuts or return the money.
Again, actions are important. Laws are important, or used to be. We still have war criminals running around and now they're motivational speakers. lol

I wonder who did the street fighting on getting more war money, Obama or Rahm or both. Obama is fond of saying, "I'm the president." Perhaps that's his way of street fighting. Said to a freshman senator, that's could be taken as an implied threat (to withhold support...and that's exactly what transpired). Our new freshman caved. :-(

Charter schools. Couldn't they hold some of their meetings in the cafeteria or gym perhaps to give the students who feel left out more time in the library? Feeling left out will only lead to hostility among the students.
Remember, Mrs. White did it with the candlestick in the LIBRARY. :-)
GM, Chrysler, GMAC and Chrysler Financial have known for months that 2009 pay for their top 25 executives could be cut; it was a condition of the federal loans that helped the automakers through their bankruptcies. GMAC and Chrysler Financial received government loans to help jump-start lethargic new-car sales in the wake of last fall's credit freeze.
Kenneth Feinberg, who reviews executive compensation for the U.S. Treasury Department, is responding to public outrage over the resumption of lavish bonuses at banks such as Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan Chase. But neither of those institutions will be subject to the pay cuts because they have already repaid the billions they borrowed under the Troubled Asset Relief Program.

- Is this Howard posting at The Hill saying that their article is wrong about him?

This story is trash. I was never called by the Hill, I have never done a whip count, and I have never had a conversation with most of the named Members.
BY Howard Dean on 10/22/2009 at 13:25
While Governor Dean, who is an independent consultant for DFA, is very involved in DFA's healthcare fight and continues to work directly with our members in the fight for a strong public option, he is not involved in the day to day work of the whip count or the confirmations on where specific members stand. Just as Governor Dean is also not responsible for NYCeve's blog content on www.StandWithDrDean.com either. We at DFA continue to keep our whip count as update as is possible with the ever changing dynamics of this very important issue and upcoming votes. However, this being Congress, we understand that some members may not always be consistent with their public statements about this issue - particularly when they come under direct mail attacks from the Republican National Committee.Whip counts are not final tallies, they are a snapshot of where we're at… not a static statement. Otherwise it wouldn't be called whipping… it would be called voting.
So even as we continue to verify answers and re-confirm positions, DFA stands by our count. We have the votes needed to pass a public option by majority votes… now it's up to Congress to get the job done. The good news is that House leadership backs up our whip count today with a count of 218 for a public option… in fact, they say they have the votes for a Robust Public Option (based on Medicare Plus 5). You can see posts reporting this here: http://www.openleft.com/diary/15644/victory-confirmed-house-has-the-votes-for-medicare-5-public-optionand here: http://politicalwire.com/archives/2009/10/22/daily_pulse_house_democrats_line_up_votes.html
I set it up. Jeez. I thought I'd get the domains anyways

Don't know how to make it work right, and I have to get out of here RIGHT NOW otherwise I totally miss my lunch hour
A different site, that's all. :-) All sites that lead to Howard are good.
