Barack Obama, the wunderkind who came out of nowhere to win the presidency, was supposed to push America out of the ditch and into a glittering future. But modernity is elusive when you’re in a time machine to the 14th century called Afghanistan. The tableau of Obama at Dover evoked the last line of “The Great Gatsby:” “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”

As Obama comforted families at a tragic moment, he also had to contemplate a tragic dimension of his own presidency: It’s nice to talk about change, but you can’t wipe away yesterday.

Obama wants to be the cosmopolitan president of the world, and social engineer at home to improve the lives of Americans.

But what he had in mind for renovating American society hinged on spending a lot of money on energy, education, the environment and health care. Instead, he has been trapped in the money pits of a recession and two wars.

For now, the man who promised revolution will have to settle for managing adversity.

It is, as Yogi Berra said, “déjà vu all over again.”

- Too bad for Annilow

- A very sad day on the blog.

By Phil Specht on Nov 1, 2009 7:57 AM EST

We all got to know such a fine person it is hard not to feel the loss of our Annilow joined with those others who have gone before. I doubt I will be alone if I hear Opera when I see a crop circle, and it will have the sound of an angel's choir.

take care all

RIP Anni,

Anni and I never met physically, though we didn't live that far apart and meeting had briefly been mentioned once.

I had no idea Anni was ill. Does anyone have any knowledge of that?

Anni, we shall miss your comments here. Her comments and pictures during and after her trip to Africa were outstanding as she was.

- Joan, I remember her talking about a flu-like

By puddle on Nov 1, 2009 8:38 AM EST

thing she was having a hard time shaking towards the end of summer.  But she was still planning her 50th reunion at the end of September.  sea had *no* idea of anything.  Since she was in hospice, I was thinking perhaps a stroke.  But don't know.  I gave sea her brother's phone number, and she mentioned perhaps trying to get in touch with him in a few days.

- Thanks puddle, she was too young and vibrant to die

By Joan In Florida on Nov 1, 2009 8:54 AM EST

Wondering if it might be something she contacted during her trip to Africa, though certainly she had the required shots. But who knows what stuff floats around over there.

- Ya. My view of it is

By puddle on Nov 1, 2009 9:01 AM EST

that people younger than me have no right to die.  I wish they'd stop doing it.

Annilow said here about trips to a Doctor for pneumonia and reported having trouble shaking it, trying different drugs since summer. She would have been a bad candidate for H1N1 for sure this fall. I don't think we need to feel guilt for not somehow being more supportive, but I do in a way. RIP friend.

- Thanks, Sweetie. I'd really rather have found nothing.

And had Anni report back from a trip to Russia, say. . . .
