Superintendent of Public Instruction
Tony Thurmond has spent his career serving the people of California, both in and out of elected office. After 20 years as a social worker, Tony served on the Richmond City Council and later on the West Contra Costa County School Board. During his tenure, he oversaw truancy prevention programs, supported school-based mental health programs, and launched an entrepreneurship program for underprivileged youth. Tony attended Temple University and completed my Master’s degrees in Law and Social Policy and Social Work at Bryn Mawr College. Currently a resident of Richmond, California, Tony believes public education has the potential to be the great equalizer.
As Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony will be the leading advocate for public education in California. Tony is running to give every child great opportunities through public education. He made improving public education a top priority while serving in the State Assembly. Tony passed legislation that provides millions of dollars to school districts to keep kids in school and out of prisons. He successfully advocated for money to make sure all former foster youth in California would have money to go to college and expanded the free lunch program to enroll 400,000 more students.
As the top education official in the state, Tony will lead the resistance against Trump’s terrible education policies. He will fight to make corporations pay their fair share to fund education. California is the 6th largest economy in the world, yet it is 46th in the nation in per-pupil spending. There must be a shift in the state budget away from incarceration and towards education.
