LaWana Slack Mayfield
Charlotte City Council, At Large
As Charlotte’s longest consecutive serving and only LGBTQI Council-Member LaWana is first keeping a campaign promise from 2011 to serve four terms as the District Representative as she believes in opening the door for new talent in the District. She has served through 6 Mayors, 3 City Managers and 2 City Attorneys, LaWana believes Charlotte needs consistency along with elected officials who will speak out against discrimination in all forms. She also believes the city needs a focus on housing affordability, transportation, access to gainful employment and public safety. She is proud of the targeted housing rehab program that she initiated in what has become a quickly gentrifying City. She has led major developments throughout District 3 including hosting 9 job fairs this year and her first re-entry job fair for those formerly incarcerated. As an activist/politician LaWana wants to continue the work she started as a district representative to improve the quality of life for all of Charlotte residents with a focus on home ownership, identifying funding for better connected transportation and pushing to raise the city’s minority small business participation goals to address upward mobility.
