U.S House, Georgia 5
State Senator Nikema Williams has always been a fearless advocate for women and families. She’s spent her time representing Georgia’s 39th Senate District fighting for working families, voting rights, and fair representation. Yet for Nikema, the fight for a more prosperous Georgia does not end in the legislature. As the first Black woman Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia, she leads the fight statewide to expand access to opportunity for all Georgians. She plays a key role at the Democratic National Committee as an Executive and Resolutions Committee member.
Nikema’s commitment to Georgians is reflected in her arduous fight for free and fair elections. From speaking out against voter suppression to ensuring that every individual’s vote is counted, Nikema will not stop until everyone’s voices are heard. In 2018, she was arrested at the State Capitol as she stood by her constituents demanding that every vote be counted following the midterm elections.
Her passion for protecting women’s rights and access to healthcare led her to her former position as Vice-President of Public Policy for Planned Parenthood Southeast. Her desire for improving the wellbeing of working families led her to serve currently as Deputy Director of Civic Engagement at the National Domestic Workers Alliance. She was born in Columbus and raised by her grandparents nearby in Smiths Station, Alabama. She attended Talladega College, a liberal arts HBCU, where she became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Nikema and her husband, Leslie Small, reside in Atlanta with their son, Carter.
On the 55th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, she launched her campaign to represent Georgia’s 5th District. In Congress, she will continue to fight as she has for her entire career to make sure that everyone can live the promise of America. As the Democratic nominee for GA-05, she will serve as one of the loudest and most progressive voices at the Capitol. She understands her community needs a strong fighter to combat repeated Republican attempts to strip away our rights, our dignity, and our ability to thrive in this country. Nikema has proven over and over again that she is a strong and fierce fighter of these dangerous policies, and she is committed to continuing to stand up for those whose voices are too often ignored.
