What am I fighting for?
My decision to run for Attorney General is generations in the making. Five generations ago, my ancestors were freed from the shackles of slavery. Just two generations ago, my grandfather endured systematic racism and discrimination on his journey to becoming a pioneering Black lawyer in Virginia. And in 1960, my father and my uncle were two of the first Black students to attend an all-white elementary school in Norfolk, Virginia. Even as a young Black man in today’s world, which my forebears hoped would be one of equality, I cannot tell you that my experience has been markedly different than the generations before me. No longer should we have an Attorney General in Virginia that is reactionary or one that waits to see how the political winds blow. Virginia deserves an AG that is proactively protecting every citizen and meeting our challenges directly with courage and strength. I’m running for Attorney General in 2021 because it’s time for a new generation of leadership that unites Virginians no matter who you are, where you come from, or what you look like as we work to promote real, comprehensive justice reform, protect consumers, ensure access to affordable and quality healthcare, and champion a more environmentally-conscious Virginia.
