DFA Women’s Slate

Burlington VT, Today, Democracy for America (DFA), endorsed four women for Senate; Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Kristen Gillibrand (D-NY). These four women are exactly the change the Democratic party and Washington need right now, said Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America (DFA). As Republicans continue to wage a war on womens rights, our economy and the very fiber of our democratic processes, these candidates will stand up and fight for the American people. These women responded to the endorsed with enthusiasm:

Tammy Baldwin: "Democracy for America is a true grassroots organization, driven by their members at every level -- and I'm proud to have their support today in my race for US Senate. DFA has supported proud progressives in past, and I'm honored to be endorsed today alongside such champions for the middle class as Senator Kristen Gillibrand, my colleague in the House Mazie Hirono, and consumer crusader Elizabeth Warren. Today's US Senate has just 17 woman serving in it -- in 2012 we have a real opportunity to hold that ground and grow the ranks. The bottom line is that we will all fight for the progressive values we share. Not for the big banks on Wall Street, the big oil companies, and corporate special interests. Not for Tea Party extremism. But for the middle class." Kristen Gillibrand: "I am proud to receive DFA's endorsement for U.S. Senate alongside a slate of such inspiring women leaders as Tammy Baldwin, Mazie Hirono, and Elizabeth Warren. With a total of eleven Democratic women running for the U.S. Senate in 2012, women are truly going to lead the way toward holding onto our Democratic majority and ensuring we get back to focusing on growing our economy and creating jobs. If Congress were 51% women we would be debating jobs, not access to birth control. With the help of the DFA community, and the extraordinary women running for Senate, I am confident that women's voices will be heard in this election." Mazie Hirono: "Thank you DFA for your support in this critical election. As an immigrant who's mother plotted and planned in secret to flee an abusive marriage in Japan to see a better life for my brothers and me in Hawaii, I take the Republicans' war on women personally. Those early years in Hawaii were difficult, but my mom worked hard to put food on the table and keep a roof over our heads. While Washington should be focused on creating jobs, Republicans would rather waste time trying to restrict women's health care and pretend the gender wage gap doesn't exist. That's not the kind of leadership we need, and in the Senate, my focus will be on getting our families back to work." Elizabeth Warren: I am delighted to receive the endorsement of Democracy for America and to stand with their million-plus members in the fight for America's future. In the battles for equal rights, for the rights of workers, or for the well-being of the middle class, DFA has been there in the trenches. I look forward to continuing to work with the DFA community and women like Mazie Hirono, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Tammy Baldwin to fight for working families in Massachusetts and across our nation.
